The Micronautics label is proud to introduce its latest addition: the band Sūtra.

Sūtra is a Paris-based experimental dance-rock duo, influenced by no wave and disco, formed by Patrick Vidal and Thomas Bourdeau.

Patrick Vidal started out as the lead singer of Marie et les Garçons, a Lyon-based no wave punk band from the late 1970s. The group had a single produced by John Cale, then recorded a dance-rock album in New York with underground disco legends, which foreshadowed the Madchester sound. Vidal became a DJ in the 1980s, first as a resident at Les Bains Douches, then a pillar of the Parisian club scene. Thomas Bourdeau, on the other hand, started as the bassist of the Nantes-based rock band Les Claques de Velours, which he founded in 1989. He approached Vidal a year later at a concert of the latter at the Rex Club, to suggest making music together. Sūtra was born of this encounter.

“Landing 76,” recorded in 1993, was the duo’s first track. It featured Vidal’s cut-up lyrics and Bourdeau’s bassline, which became the band’s signature sound. In addition, the guitars of Erik Fitoussi, formerly of Marie et les Garçons, and Christophe Bormans, formerly of Les Claques de Velours, roar over a jazzy loop taken from a concert by poet Amiri Baraka (founder of the Black Arts Movement). The spirit of William Burroughs and the Beat Generation emerges on the dancefloor.

Christophe Monier (The Micronauts) was in charge of the programming and, 3 years later, the two club versions. Vidal and Monier had previously produced together the first 12" of the first French techno label (Discotique “Sexe”, on Rave Age Records). Today, “Landing 76” is released on Micronautics, Monier’s label; the loop is closed!
